Quality of Life

As we go through our life our priorities change on what we consider important to enhance our "Quality of Life". What we considered important when we were 21 usually does not make the list when we are 73. For me at 73 being able to be in a natural setting and enjoy nature gives me energy and provides a real "upper". There is something about viewing mountains, lakes, waterfalls and the expanse of a salt water bay that gives me freedom and energy. Here in Bellingham you can always find a place to enjoy and be alone with nature within the city limits. This photo was taken in Boulevard Park which is 1/2 mile Southwest of downtown Bellingham on Bellingham Bay. An over-the-water boardwalk to the Southwest connects Boulevard Park to Fairhaven and a new over-the-water boardwalk will be constructed in 2012 to connect Boulevard Park to the Waterfront District to the Northeast providing a traffic free walking and biking experience. Boulevard Park is one of many "getaways" within the city limits of Bellingham. You can view all of these getaways on my website in Gallery 1.

Decisions on Retirement Living

There is no place like home and for all of us seniors we will have to make decisions, as we grow older, on housing options we will need. These options typically fall into three catagories; 1) independent meals, activities, house-keeping and maintenance for more active seniors 2) assisted living providing housing and seniors needing assistance with personal care or medication taking 3) housing providing  nursing care services to those who require long term health care. Examples of these retirement options are; Independent Living Retirement Commuities, Assisted Living Facilities and Nursing Homes. Bellingham Washington provides all of these retirement options for seniors with a highly regarded hospital with a highly ranked cardiovascular staff. I am a  senior of 73 years and understand the magnitude of the decisions that seniors must make as we grow older to try and maintain our lifestyle. Immediate family plays a major role in helping us make the right decisions as we struggle with choices about moving out of your home, relocating and loss of independence. Please don't hesitate to provide a comment on your experience with the decision making on retirement options and your priorities.

The Perfect Retirement Community

What do you consider to be "The Perfect Retirement Community" ?

Starting January 1, 2011 there will be 10,000 " Baby Boomers" entering the retirement market every day for the next 19 years. What will they be looking for in a retirement community?? Much of what they will looking for will be subjective based on their personal wants and needs. Other services like health care are mandatory please share with me your wants and needs. I have profiled what I consider to be "The Perfect Retirement Community" being Bellingham WA. http://www.beautifulbellingham.com/. This Blog will be series addressing the needs of retirees; Health Care, Recreation, Traffic Free Walks, Climate, Easy Access and Expense to hopefully open a dialog on "What you consider to be "The Perfect Retirement Community" ??
